Event Description

Regular Meeting

Everyone is welcome at the free regular meeting of the Nanaimo Astronomy Society. Come out and meet others like yourself who are curious to learn about the night sky.

Presentation

Our presentation this evening is "Massive Star Formation: The Role of Disks. And Beyond" by Dr. Cassandra Fallscheer-  University of Victoria, Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics

Dr. Fallscheer will give an introduction to high mass star formation highlighting some of the research carried out during her PhD studies. Cassandra will also introduce the Herschel project that she is currently working on at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics. She will discuss some of the radio astronomy 'tools of the trade' as well as an instrumentation project which Cassandra contributed to at the Sub millimeter Array receiver lab during her PhD studies.

Bio

Cassandra Fallscheer grew up in northern California. Shortly after she moved away to college, a community observatory was built in her hometown so Cassandra volunteered as a docent there during school breaks. She studied math and physics as an undergrad at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and then went to Wesleyan University for a masters degree in astronomy studying low mass star formation. Afterward, She moved to the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany where Cassandra finished her PhD on high mass star formation. Dr. Fallscheer has been working at  UVic/HIA since 2009 using Herschel data on star formation.

Show & Tell
