Event Description

The Nanaimo Astronomy Society and the Harbourfront Library celebrate astronomy day with an event the whole family can enjoy:

  • solar viewing (weather permitting)
  • meteorite display
  • telescope display
  • guest speakers
  • volunteers to answer your space questions

Speakers will be:
11 AM: Dr. Bill Weller - "Killer Rocks From Space"

An asteroid strikes the earth wiping out the dinosaurs after millions of years of ruling the earth.  Are we next?  Is the Earth just one ball in a Solar System-sized pool table?  Was the Tunguska event in 1908 a comet fragment?  Are more "killer" rocks about to rain down on us from space?  During this presentation, Dr. Bill Weller will talk about past impacts, their effects and the possibility of future strikes.

2 PM: Garland Coulson - "Light Pollution & The Nanaimo Dark Sky Project"

Garland Coulson, President of the Nanaimo Astronomy Society," presents a free community information session called "Nanaimo Dark Sky Project & Light Pollution." Come out to learn what light pollution is, how it affects you, how it affects the environment, what you can do about it.

During the presentation, Garland will also discuss turning Westwood Lake into an Dark Sky Park.
