September 24th meeting : From Avro to NASA, plus member Seestar astrophotography show n tell

Our member meetings are open to the public. Members of the public can attend once for free, and are then encouraged to join our little society.
First of all, BIG apologies for the lack of communication regarding our upcoming meeting tomorrow night. As previously communicated we thought we had a speaker booked from NASA-JPL, however we were unable to get confirmation of that and ran out of time waiting for NASA to confirm. Luckily we were able to book a last minute replacement.

| From Avro to NASA
We are very pleased to have Chris Gainor presenting via zoom.
Summary: Long before Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen flew to the moon on Artemis II with three American astronauts, Canadian engineers worked with NASA to help put Apollo astronauts on the surface of the moon. The story begins in 1959 when the Canadian government cancelled the CF-105 Avro Arrow program, and a new American agency called NASA hired some of the top engineers from Avro to help get astronauts into space in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. Chris Gainor will tell the story of these people from Avro Canada and other Canadian contributions to the Apollo program.
Bio:
Chris Gainor is the author of the official NASA History of Hubble Space Telescope Operations and of five other books. He is the president of the RASC Victoria Centre, a former national president of the RASC, and the editor of Quest: The History of Spaceflight Quarterly. He holds a Ph.D. in the History of Technology from the University of Alberta.
After the break. NAS member/director Bob Crosby will talk about his experience with his Seestar smart telescope. This will include a comparison of different models, Seestar S30 Pro features, and his best photos to date. |
